About "Bygone Era: Saudade - STOLEN"

'Bygone Era' is the new series I've decided on. I always associate the term with sepia tone photographs, the tones wrong, the highlights blown out and yet there is something sentimental in those photos. Particularly old wildlife or safari photos. They capture something of the romance and adventure of the time. That is what I hope this series will convey.
The first of the series' title, 'Saudade' comes from a Love & Rockets song of the same title. It's a haunting track that has sentimental value to me and what was going through my head while painting this piece. The word is Portuguese, and there is no real English equal.
Wikipedia defines the word as "a feeling of nostalgic longing for something or someone that one was fond of and which is lost. It often carries a fatalist tone and a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might really never return. Saudade differs from nostalgia in that whereas nostalgia involves a mixed happy and sad feeling for the lost memories, saudade involves the hope that what is being longed for might return. Saudade has been described as a vague and constant desire for something that does not and probably cannot exist,... a turning towards the past or towards the future. A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing."

About Carl

Carl Verster

Carl Verster lives and works in Hillcrest, Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa.

Carl: "Art has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. My father was a wizard with drawing and painting and was always turning stone and wood into the most marvellous figure sculptures. My mother still paints watercolour landscapes and would take me on trips to galleries as a young child. I studied "responsible" subjects but always knew that I would end up with art being what I would do. Paint is the most fantastic medium to work with and can easily be used to convey the most complex and subtle messages to the viewer.

I paint best when I am at emotional highs or lows, but always I am a painter ... it's what I do."
