About "Desolation"
A far place, far off the beaten road, one will find the lonely place of desolation, that is The Great Karoo. A place where the lonely traveller may easily lost his bearing, and where the opposite is also true - where the tired and beaten person will go to find his soul! The Great Karoo, a semi-arid stretch of land in the central southern part of South Africa, the name possibly derived from the Khoikhoi word "garo" which means desert. Once denounced by early journeymen as a frightening place of great heat, great frosts, great floods, great droughts and miles of emptiness. Having flat mountains known as dolerite sills, and vast valleys and stretched of grassland (low savannah) and small trees and shrubs. As part of a very ancient land, a treasure trove for fossil hunters and academics of natural history. Truly a place of unique beauty, worth to go to. Go on, pack your bags in your pick-up and navigate the road to the Great Karoo, a place that will enrich your soul and spirit.

About Ian
From a very young age I (including family and relatives)observed that I have a natural flair for art and in specific drawing with pencils and later on oil pastel. I am a very creative and hands-on practical person. I never attended any formal art classes throughout my school and work career, however, I was influenced by observing various art styles and techniques from numerous artists and the physical world around me. One of those artists is my wife whose speciality is creation of paintings of building structures and patterns with depth and somewhat touching on the abstract or modern depiction of the latter.
Strangely for quite some time (almost 18 years!) I never created any artworks until the passing away of my mother in early 2016. My sister, a mother, avid traveller, musician and lover of fine arts commissioned me to create something special for her, for displaying inside her little wooden cottage in a secluded spot in the family's next-door wild garden. The work (titled 'Moment of Summer')emerged beyond expectation, and that spurred me to dust off my old art tool box and re-opening the 'book of art creation', rekindling an old natural skill of mine creating in color, shape, though experience, observations, feelings and emotions and driven by passion for the beautiful things in life, capturing an image in a way special to me.
I love to identify images for painting off the beaten path, using some alchemy to transform an awareness or observation into a work of gold...
Thank you for joining my journey!
Enjoy! Ian du Plessis August 2016
