About "Lesson Time"

The intimacy and intensity of the relationship between a father and son sets the mood for this painting, as the father, who has experienced the hardships of life, imparts knowledge and learning to his boy. It is a moment in time where all else is put aside and the concentration of the task at hand is all consuming. I kept the background muted and simple so that the focus was entirely on the figures, and the play on light and shadow adds to the mood. The family is poor, the father is weathered and tough, his clothes are simple and of rough cloth, whereas the boy is still fresh and innocent in comparison, his clothes oversized and hanging in voluminous folds around his feet and hands. This gives the boy a sense of vulnerability as he sits on his father[0x1]s knee, and concentrates on the precious knowledge that his father is sharing

About Barbi

Barbi Vandewalle

Having been born and brought up in Central Africa , I have always been humbled by the vast canvas and the infinite palette of hues, shades and colours that Mother Earth so reverently offers us. As much as the forever changing expansive skies, the never ending kaleidoscope of land and water, so too am I inspired by the fragility and expression of humankind, and it is all of these that form the basis of my subject material.

Although I have had no formal tuition, but have always been involved in artistic endeavors, I started concentrating on painting 12 years ago, under the mentor ship of Tim Johnson and Leonie Turck. I thank them for their love and patience and even more for believing in me.

I paint primarily for enjoyment, concentrating in watercolours and oils.I now have my own art group teaching watercolours to both beginners and those who are more experienced. My art has become my passion, and every day I am grateful for the experience and the peace that comes to me when I pick up my brush and watch the cohesion of magic and colour. I paint mainly on a commission basis and my work can be found throughout Southern Africa, as well as internationally as far as China, France London, and Australia.
