About "My Three Models in the Cafe Voltaire"

This work, like most of my human-based imagery, is an exploration of the inner/outer dynamics of the human psyche. I like to think that people generate a descriable range of emotional and other anecdotal energy around them; that this energy bounces off other people and off the environment my characters inhabit. Simply put, I try to paint people in such a way as to show that they are not just objects in space but rather that they electrify and change the spaces they are in. The model for this work is my wife and her particular attitude to the world - sort of quiet and absorbtive, but also quite satirical, even cynical at times. Behind her is a screen or a painting or a view of nudes, landscape, oddities that are also part of my stock in trade as a painter. Above her is Francis Bacon's arrow - an acknowledgement of one major source for my pleasure in art-making. All these elements speak of my long love affair with the painterly, the mysterious, the evocative and the expressive in paint. And, it should be said, my long love affair with the beautiful woman I paint. The Cafe Voltaire was the venue for much experimental art in the Dada epoch. I like it as a venue for my muses.
