About "Progeria - Leon Botha"

When I read the history of Leon Botha, it touched me deeply. I love his art and his way of looking at life. He is a true inspiration to anyone.
Leon Botha (4 June 1985 - June 5, 2011) was a South African painter and musician as well as one of those suffering from progeria, a rare genetic disease sufferers 1 in 8 million newborns
"First I am, like you, a spiritual being. Then I am human and this part of the human body that is, has a condition"
Progeria is a rare condition that is remarkable because its symptoms strongly resemble normal human aging, but occur in young children. It usually is not passed down through families. Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome ("Progeria", or "HGPS") is caused by a mutation in the gene called LMNA (pronounced, lamin - a). The LMNA gene produces the Lamin A protein, which is the structural scaffolding that holds the nucleus of a cell together. Researchers now believe that the defective Lamin A protein makes the nucleus unstable. That cellular instability appears to lead to the process of premature aging in Progeria.
Progeria Research Foundation has now discovered that a drug called FTI, which they tested only on mice, appears to be repairing cells affected by projerin. Dr Gordon: 'FTI is the first drug that we discovered might help us to treat progeria.' Here you can see a gene that is misshapen due to projerin. Only 72 hours after FTI has been applied the cell appears regularly shaped.
When doing the painting I wanted to express the following:
Left top Corner – Leon did not want to be part of a statistic, but wanted to be remembered for the person he was. He reached out to other, forming a network of people around him that accelerated him a person and the art he loved so much
Right to corner – Progeria being such an aggressive decease there is now HOPE with the FTI drug that was discovered. The key to hope, and light in these special children’s lives, giving them wings to live a full life like all other children
The scull and hand, is the dark undertone all his work had, due to the depression he was suffering, being stuck in the body he had. Also to express the harshness of the decease taking life from the people born with it
The cells painted is to express the mutation that appears when the cells are deformed in the DNA, though it appears to be perfect, referring to the apple, the inside is not what it seems to be.
The turntable is just a contribution to the DJ work he did in the Antwoord.

About Lenten

Lenten der Mond

I want to create a sense of scrutiny and inquisitiveness, for the spectator to think outside the box, to detect more than the depiction in front of him. I crave to connect to people in a divine manner, to make way to self discovery while exploring beyond the palpable.

My first painting was done in 2012, imminent from a dream. I always loved to draw and fooling around with material paint, but never gave thought of doing it on canvas - or if I am honest to myself.....Had the guts to do so

My inspiration is an emotional response to what I experience in life. By directing it on canvas I am able to portray what I experience to a more universal language. I find symbolism a great tool to portray my inner feelings, and yet it still enables me to disguise the harshness of some emotions.

The symbolism of color as well as the objects used in all the portraits' enhance the meaning beyond the palpable, and only after realising what the true meaning are, beyond what you see, you will be able to understand the intrigue in the true objective.

Every canvas I do is based on a specific person, or life experience. While I was discovering what I wanted to do, I distanced myself from the portraits, selecting other people to be represented. I looked at famous people, and rather portrayed them, than showing myself. It was only when I became more relaxed and gained more confidence that I was willing to bring it closer to home.
