About "Shattered Illusions"

Contemporary society is obsessed with outward appearances, with looks, fashion, the external and the superficial. We study our reflections in shop windows, elevator mirrors, reflective surfaces, whenever the opportunity arises to touch up, straighten, appraise and adore the reflected self. Some surreptitiously glance at their reflections while others, utterly self-absorbed in their appearances, bring traffic to a halt, cause collisions on pavements and shove elevator passengers aside in an effort to confirm the illusion is still in place. Until the illusion becomes reality and emerges from the mirror, the negative self, the other you. What then?

Selfies are taken without consideration for others. We pout, flex, adopt alluring stances to feed social media and gain a following, obtain 'likes' and generally show everyone our Hollywood lifestyle.

Yet when the mirror cracks and we are seen for our true self, so many of us do not measure up to the carefully constructed persona we have created. Relationships, trust and adoration crumbles before the ugly truth that we are hollow, ineffectual and flawed.

Does the negative image lurking behind the mirror then become reality? Does the artfully posed couple's reflection appear from between the cracks to haunt us? Do we invite the world of opposites/mirror-images into ours? At what cost?

About Mark

Mark Boshoff

The play of light and dark on objects, landscapes and figures is a constant source of inspiration for me.
I seek a narrative in fleeting moments of wonder and convey my perceptions through mark-making, glazes and barely visible brush strokes.
