About Margaret

Margaret Schoeman-Ramsay

Margaret is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Margaret is driven by her need to create beautiful things; when she was a little girl she would spend her time making items from natural materials and by the time she was 40 and living in Swaziland her creativity had found expression in exquisite handcrafted jewellery.

In 1979 Margaret, her husband, Darryl and their two sons had established their home on a smallholding on the outskirts of Rustenburg in the old Transvaal where she introduced “Gem Tree” craft to South Africa. With the help of Darryl she developed this into a successful export business employing 40 creative women.

In 1982 Margaret was the runner-up in the “Small Businesswoman of the Year” competition and within a year of that was chosen at a world-class gem and mineral show in Arizona, U.S.A. as the person producing the most unique craft for her aloe carved from serpentine dolomite.

In 1993 Margaret and Darryl retired to Rhodes in the North Eastern Cape. Living in this breathtakingly beautiful countryside Margaret was inspired to turn her talents to painting for the first time. After six years she became desperate to share the wonderful world of art with other artists and to find outlets for her work, things which she could not do from the remote hamlet of Rhodes.

After searching throughout South Africa for an ideal place in which to settle, Margaret and Darryl decided on Villiersdorp in the Western Cape where they settled in 1999. She joined the Elgin Art Group of artists and within three years was painting in watercolour, acrylic and oils. Margaret’s artistry has gone from strength to strength; she works and exhibits at her studio in her lovely home in Villiersdorp and her work is sold widely.
