About "Calabash Girl"
My admiration of black women, their beauty, their serenity and the vibrancy of their traditional dress inspired this painting. The colours signify our wonderful rainbow nation.
Born in the wilds of Zambia in 1960, I developed a deep passion for the outdoors, wildlife and solitude. My father was an adventurist and my mother and I accompanied him on many excursions into the Kafue and the Luangwa Valley, which left me in sheer awe of nature[0x1]s beauty. It is a time of my life that has influenced my entire thinking and instilled in me a need to remember what I have seen by capturing those images on canvas. In that way, I can share those moments with others, despite the fact that times and places have changed.
Commissioned by Cacadu District Council for a painting for Jacob Zuma.
