About "Shipwreck" The Eastern Cape coastline is notoriously dangerous and has claimed many a sailing vessel. The rusted remains of two shipwrecks litter the beach at my doorstep. This painting evolved over a period of time and does not represent a particular wreck. It is based on impressions , memories , a visit to the shipwreck section in the East London Museum. A sudden unexpected mishap will send a sturdy vessel to its doom. Likewise, bad choices and unexpected circumstances can wreck a human life. Frame can be removed. |

For me, having been born into a family of artists, painting was always the natural thing to do. From my early childhood my mother encouraged drawing and painting and playing with clay. I drew on any available surface and won my first art prize at the age of 6. Attending art exhibitions and visiting galleries formed part of my upbringing, as did taking Art as a matric subject in 1956. Throughout my long busy life as educator, wife and mother, I was privileged to receive tuition from various well-known accomplished artists who gave me a thorough grounding in drawing and painting in various media. I believe there is no substitute for a sound foundation and years of practice and perseverance. This training has equipped me to express my intense emotional and spiritual response to the created world around me. Through my art I try to convey some of my passion to the viewer. I want a painting to be more than a picture, rather a window to my soul. I want the viewer to experience some of the wonder and excitement I feel when I look at the wonderful world around me. I don't copy other artists, and refuse to be seduced by gimmicks. Each work must be original, so painting for commercial gain has never been a priority. My greatest joy is when a painting finds a home with an appreciative collector. Though I have no claim to fame, many of my paintings have found their way overseas. Now that I've returned to my roots in the Eastern Cape, I find myself overwhelmed with new ideas and impressions, all waiting to be translated on to canvas Education; BA (Pretoria),HED (KZN)Career; Language teacher, housewife, mother.
