About Jessie

Jessie Mooy

Jessie is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Jessie was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and as a child emigrated with her parents to South Africa where she studied Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria, specializing in painting. After obtaining her BA(Fine Arts) she also obtained her Higher Teaching Diploma at this institution. After many years, dedicated to teaching and her own art, she studied Sculpture techniques at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, The Eastern Cape. From 1991 she concentrated more and more on sculptural ceramics, combining figurines as well as fauna and flora in her work. She expresses the unity and creativity of nature combined with the life giving earth mother through all her work whether they are paintings or scuptural work. Since 2009 she lives and works in the Dordogne France and still expresses this concept in herwork.

Jessie Mooy’s skill and passion as an artist,is reflected in a career that spans over 30 years. Her work has been internationally recognised through representation at such exhibitions as a South African touring exhibition of Ceramic Art and clay sculptures in The Netherlands, 2005;The New Trends Show, Art Asia, Hong Kong 1994. The JOHANNESBURG International Art BIENNALE, South Africa 1995.She has exhibited her work in South Africa,Holland, Belgium, France, Spain and Japan. Her work has been taken up in national and international collections worldwide and been bought by various Art Museums in South Africa namely The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum,Port Elizabeth; The Durban Art Museum, Natal; The Pietersburg(Polokwani) Art Museum, (Limpopo Province) etc. She has received numerous awards and prizes for her ceramic work in South Africa.

More recently In the Dordogne where I live there are many prehistoric caves nearby, like Lascaux. The lively paintings in natural pigments, 17,000 years old, have made a big impression on me. They have been painted by stone age man, probably the artists were shamans. I have seen many similar prehistoric paintings in South Africa.I have become more aware that we live on a very tiny, precious little planet spiraling in a vast cosmos and we all have to realize that we are part of this delicate ecological balance on this earth – our Mother.
