About Mark

Mark Raats

Mark is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Mark Raats was born in Primrose, Germiston in 1959. As a young boy he practiced his drawing skills by copying Hal Forster’s weekly comic strip - Prince Valiant. He was also keen to pursue a career with Disney animation.

On completing a National Diploma in Fine Arts in 1982, he was attracted to the fledgling computer graphics industry completing his first Computer Animated short film in December 1985.

In the late 90’s he was re-introduced to traditional art when he did a colored pencil portrait of President Nelson Mandela - for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

He continues to work across many of the art disciplines and has had political cartoons published in international newspapers. Recently, filmmaker George Lucas acquired one of his pieces of art.

Specializing in Acrylic Paint and colored pencil, Raats prefers realistic studies and more recently he began exploring the fields of wildlife and figure art.
