About Alan

Alan Raubenheimer

Alan is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

I used to teach painting and History of Art but resigned in 1994 in order to paint. I bought framing equipment to frame our own work but have never had the time to paint because the picture framing took over my life. But the drive to be creative in ways which are beyond the confines of framing has never subsided. An affinity to photography has always been part of my make-up and looking at my immediate environment through a view finder is akin to what I tried to develop in my students - seeing things which normal people either do not notice or merely gloss over - seeing differently - seeing the detail
A second contributing element is an attraction to visual work which is abstract in nature - purely displays of colour, texture, shape and form. Despite the fact that I am using carefully selected images of the real world, in layering and super-imposing different images, I am seeking an abstracted result.
The third element which influenced the work is the intrigue I always felt when teaching about Rembrandt and others that used chiaroscuro as a compositional device. It infuses an air of mystery and spatial ambiguity by demolishing exact outlines - dark backgrounds "flow" into shadows on the object being painted.
To achieve that effect in this work, digital burning is employed in the required areas. Theoretically this work is diametrically opposed to making a painting in that paint, colour, light etc is added to the canvas to arrive at an image whereas I now start with a complete image as provided by the camera and use tools which eliminate the light, colour and form to a large extent - a sort of deconstruction of reality to arrive at an abstraction.
This work is not fractal art but has it's source in real Palms, Aloes and Cacti.
