About Loraine

Loraine Yaffe

Loraine is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

On hearing the first birds twittering in the early morning I fly out of bed with a sense of urgency, a desire to create. I paint because it is my passion, which is both a curse and a blessing in that I have emotions dying to surface, and now! When I am not creating, or have not had a chance to be creative for a while, I become impatient and irritable. True artists think and feel differently from other people expressing themselves creatively. Wassily Kandinsky stated the following : "The artist is not a ’Sunday child’ for whom everything immediately succeeds. He does not have the right to live without duty. The task that is assigned to him is painful, it is a heavy cross for him to bear."

I was born in rural South Africa on 25 July 1960. Since an early age, art, in all its forms, has held a facination for me. I remember painting murals at school for functions like plays and the matric farewell, decorating halls for weddings, etc. My hobbies include painting, pyrography, photography, beading, candle making, bonzais, sewing, crocheting, gardening, ie. for now!

Although I studied Commercial Art after school and Art was one of my favourite subjects at High School, my art is basically self-taught - I do what I want to do and feel like doing. I was inspired by Great Masters like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt, always striving to achieve perfection (which I never do). Forms of art that I enjoy include oil painting, acrylic painting and Pyrography.

I have found pyrography to be a great medium for depicting wildlife in South Africa. It is the art of burning images onto wood or leather with a hot iron. This art form allows for a great range of natural tones and shades to be achieved. The work is very time consuming as each line is burnt individually. Sometimes I apply oil colour to my leather works.

A lot of my work is realistic, but I also enjoy abstract art tremendously - I enjoy the freedom of altering and adapting reality. As Aristotle so wisely said "The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance". My favourite medium is oil on canvas followed by acrylic painting and graphite pencil.
