About Shirley

Shirley Smuts

Shirley is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

As an artist I am inspired by natural colours around me every day. The world that God created is a very colourful one. I particularly love to paint flowers and fruits. I find the colours in both subjects extremely attractive and the variety of colours found if you really look, are endless. I also enjoy to paint these natural objects in a relationship with man-made objects like interesting vases, copper bowls etc. The reflection of colour is a fascinating thing and one only has to look very carefully in your daily life to see this happen around us. Colour is not flat and every colour reflects and changes with other colours. Colour is my thing, I love it!

Exhibitions

As a Graphic Designer I never exhibited as most of my work then was for a corporate company. Once home and raising a family I decided to try my hand at Fine Art using the medium of pastels. After working with a studio, once a week for 2 years, I joined other artists in an exhibition during September of 2004. This exhibition was held at our parish church hall and was inspired by a need to contribute to helping those affected by AIDS in our country. St Thomas's has many talented artists amongst their parish members. The exhibition was very successful so I entered two paintings for the annual SASA exhibition and one was chosen. As this was the first time I had ever tried to exhibit with the society I was very pleased to have a painting chosen. I hope to have another exhibition next year - 2007.
