About "Elim 5"

The monochrome photos were taken in ’94 and things have changed since then in Elim for better or worse, the children are older, some people have passed on, some of the buildings have decayed and some renovated.

Some people have commented that I should not have been so “honest” maybe?!

To me there is beauty in those backyards, there are lines and form, interesting structures, the rusty curvy tops of gates, a broken window pane, children playing…

All brought back memories of childhood, smells and tastes and emotions – the honeycombs my grandfather brought for us which we sucked until the wax was white. The old shop filled with the smell of salami and paraffin. The sweets you bought in a paper bag and the meals my grandmother used to make when we went there on holiday.

This little town where people are the ‘salt of the earth’, where there is still simplicity and complexity, where there is a life force, the old and the new push and pull, where people adapt, where the young people work away, yet everyone who comes from there longs to go home to.

My work mostly concerns the interaction between past and the modern lifestyle.I find inspiration in all walks of life and social interactions between real and imagined perspectives as well as animate and inanimate objects.
Apprenticeship to artist Magriet Rawlings

Cape Peninsula university of technology C.P.U.T. 1990-1992, studied photography
Currently working on personal photographic collections as well as archiving for Hurricane Photographers
