About Pawel

Pawel is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Pawel Sowka obtained his education whilst studying in Poland. He works from his studio in Vanderbijlpark- south of Johannesburg.
He has garnered a formidable portfolio of portrait work since arriving in South Africa in 1990. Over the past 19 years he has painted close to 900 portraits from life and photography.

"My style is very much my own. I like to invest a lot of energy and spirit into my work to create as bold and as personal a portrait as possible. I largely work from photographs as it offers me the privacy and time to really scrutinize the model. Prior to painting of a portrait, I'd like to meet with the subject to get a sense of character and personality" - P.Sowka

His first concern is always drawing, composition and design, but it is with colour, that he has a chance to really express himself to the fullest. He has a distinctive personal and often provocative style which sometimes does not appeal to the buyer who seeks photographic realism.
