About "Cross-stitch"

This outspoken elderly german lady reminded me of my late mom - what a sense of humour too! ... however when holding the pose she found a peaceful meditative state and sat immobile for more than an hour at a time. She specialises in very fine petit pont - an intricate type of tapestry - where she creates wonderful Madonna pictures.

About Sonja

The thrill of capturing a likeness and a growing fascination with faces motivated Sonja Chambers to pursue the specialised field of portrait painting. Since her painting career began in 2001 through art lessons with Chris Ruthven and Marcelle Lyons, she’s produced numerous portrait commissions in oils. In 2008 she began evening sculpture classes at Michaelis, UCT, where she models heads in clay.

Recently Chambers ventured from a naturalistic depiction of her subject to a looser, more impressionistic and abstract interpretation. Moving from the observed to suggestive possibilities, she employs the role of memory and chance. Spontaneous, lively and energetic brushstrokes invite the viewer to find hidden faces as they delve into the layered, patterned maze dancing on the canvas.

Working fulltime as set back-up for Film & Advertising, she adapts a wide variety of mediums and techniques for prop fabrication, model building, mould-making, etc. Her extensive studio set-up at home is the ideal environment for practising her varied creative outlets, including delving into paint pots between work projects.

Exhibitions

A member of SASA since 2002, Sonja Chambers exhibited that year at their Annual Exhibition, and each year from 2005 to 2008, where she was each time selected for the following year's Merit Exhibition based on the external judges’ points. Her paintings are in private and corporate collections in South Africa, Europe, the UK and USA.
