About Christiaan
Christiaan is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.
Moving forward; From Canvas to “Car Paint”.
“Christiaan spray framed masonite boards with 2k car enamel which gives his canvasses a very glossy modern finish. “I am trying to move away from the conventional idea of a material canvas which has a grainy rough texture”. From here he drips oil based super enamel on these canvasses to create his images. This leaves for very modern looking, blocked framed paintings consisting of only primary colours.
His Work
In 2005, at the beginning of Christiaan’s career, he exhibited abstract expressionistic work. Abstract expressionism is also known as ‘Action Painting’ and is characterised by an attempt to depict universal emotions. His more recent bodies of work, including the works you see today is reminiscent of ’Allegoricism’.
‘Allegoricism’ is defined as a meaning hidden in its subject matter which the viewer must ‘read’. It usually has a clear or precise associative meaning and does not require an intuitive response from the reader.
Allegory was popular in Baroque art. Many painters wanted to enjoy the same high status as poets and used allegory as a way of introducing painterly equivalents of allusion and metaphor. Allegorical painting requites the viewer to have a working knowledge of classical literature, mythology and history, as well as Christian theology and traditions. It relies more on our emotional and intuitive response to it. There are two main trends in Baroque allegorical painting, one public, the other private. Public allegorical paintings attempt to influence the way we think about Church and State.
The private trend in allegorical painting explores morals and truths relating to our experience of life. See “Stones of Stature”- which is an allegory for the modern state of economics where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer in the modern “Information Phase”, we are experiencing now.
“My works have definitely become more figurative as I lately started “moving” the dripped paint around with the back of a brush. See “The Mourning Palace”; this is a good example of the characters, (the little devils pulling down the virtuous) or figures I am currently bringing into my work. With most of my first abstract paintings, painting happened impulsively. Now I develop ideas in my head before I paint. My works will always retain its abstraction and symbolism, reminiscent of the modern abstract movement, but it is becoming more intricate and detailed
