About Dianne

Dianne McNaughton

Dianne is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Painting has become my vehicle of expressing thoughts, emotions and passions using the poetic, musical and universal visual language of art. It has allowed me to discover who I am and find out what I have to say at a subconscious level, where all the genetic knowledge and experience since early childhood is stored away, waiting to be tapped into. The subconscious mind is the source of a unique frame of reference because it speaks the language of feeling and symbolism.
The original meaning of the word, "Artist" in Sanskrit was, "One who sees things fitting together", I feel the connectivity of one thing to another and try to express these connections. Absolute honesty is required for this process in order to express oneself in an authentically personal way.
The experimental versatility of the acrylic medium has opened up a multitude of pathways to my own personal expression. I am stimulated by the images created by nature with regard to the earth, water and light. Natural patterns are revealed by the play of light on the underlying structure of earth and water. I try to focus on shapes and colour and somehow breathe in the atmosphere of the landscape before me. I love to paint using my intuition, imagination and memory, initially in a purely abstract manner dealing with colour, form and texture. During the painting process, images may be revealed rather than my dictating the direction of the painting. As the painting progresses, thoughts, ideas, feelings or dreams may be stimulated, which may then be transformed into visual images. My dialogue with the painting can lead to many transformations, until the work arrives at its destination and is complete.
The final image, be it abstract or realistic, needs to communicate an idea or an emotion and hopefully the viewer will be able to share and experience this.
