About Rheta-Mari

Rheta-Mari Kotze

Rheta-Mari is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

RHETA-MARI KOTZE

Born - Luanshya, Zambia

Rheta did her schooling in Zambia & Zimbabwe. She won numerous art competitions, one of which was the Anglo American Calendar Competition.

Rheta studied Graphic Design at Durban Technikon, South Africa.
She then stayed on in Durban & worked in the Silkscreen, Publishing & Advertising Industry, specialising in finished art, layout, design, illustration & studio management.

After working for 25 years, Rheta decided to leave the corporate world to pursue a full time career in Fine Art. She found that it opened up endless challenges & avenues for experimenting with various mediums & ideas, allowing her to be more creative.

Her love for Navajo Indian jewellery, antique silver jewellery & also sculpture led her into experimenting with metals on a larger scale. Rheta now creates HAND BEATEN Wall Sculptures in ALUMINIUM, a unique technique that she has been perfecting over the last 12 years. She 'draws' on metal using a screw driver, hammer and other adapted tools. These produce a striking effect of light & shadow, which she loves.

NB: These sculptures are NOT CAST or MOULDED in any way and are therefore ORIGINALS, as each indentation on the metal is one stroke of her hand held hammer and screw driver.

Rheta is self-taught & also enjoys working in acrylics, oil pastels, mixed media & woodcuts. Her versatility in medium & subject matter (abstract to highly detailed realism), love for colour & texture are obvious in her work. Many of her works reflect African influences, be it the bright colours, design elements or subject matter. She finds variety essential in keeping her stimulated & driven.

Rheta’s work is mostly contemporary & nonrepresentational. She has discovered that when she allows her energy to reign free, the possibilities of what she might create are endless and her finished work is bound to reflect that energy she feels during the process.

Rheta is privileged to have been chosen to appear as one of x13 artists featured on the DsTV in the "Droomhuis" series on the kykNet channel in October 2010.

Rheta has exhibited her work at the:

New York International Art Show, Philadelphia, Cardiff, Hilton Arts Festival, Pietermaritzburg Art in the Park (2005, 2010, 2011, 2013), Decorex Show (Durban & Johannesburg), Nedcor Building Summit (Johannesburg), Rand Easter Show (Johannesburg), House & Garden Show (Durban),
& various solo & group exhibitions in South Africa.
She has work in private & corporate collections worldwide & exhibits in galleries around South Africa.
