About "Blood Lily"

This lily is an absolute wonder and joy in the garden. On one of our walks through a wild glen, my husband and I spotted these bright flowers glowing amongst the grass. We pulled up a couple plants and took them home. Now, after about eight years we still have the joy at the beginning of spring - when we spot these huge buds pushing through the soil. Their stems are so strong that they support little birds that suck the nector from the flowers.

About Arlene

Arlene McDade

Arlene is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

I live on the Bluff in Durban and due to the Bluff's elevation, it has the most spectacular sea views and this is the inspiration for all my seascapes. Durban is sub-tropical and has a lucious growth of beautiful flowering shrubs and trees. One does not have to go far, to be inspired to paint. I enjoy design, colour and texture to create an effect. Sometimes I paint the same flower in three different sizes, to be exhibited together. Ultimately I am a "design" artist, if that makes any sense.

Creating an effect with oversized botanical paintings gives the home and work environment a luxurious, tropical aura. My art is an extention of my womanhood and desire to create a tranquil and inspiring, living and working space. The objective I pursue in my art is harmony and peace.

Besides botanical subjects I love the Indian Ocean and it's different moods. Our huge azure sea with endless blue African skies, framed by massive Strelitzia Nicolai. The former bearing pods of white flowers that resemble mysterious, big white birds.

COMMISSIONS: I am willing to take on commissions of all subjects and lately have an interest in painting pets - see 'Princey' who is my latest. Like people, pets have their own personality and I try to capture this elusive quality.

I sometimes feel like a cross between a Victorian botanist and Claude Monet - stalking nature with a paintbrush. The absolute beauty of, one flower, drives me.

On request, a very limited edition of Giclee prints are available. These can be ordered according to clients required size. Should your budget not extend to acquiring the original, you will be very pleased with the result of the print on canvas. The average price for the giclee prints are R2,083.00 each. This is supplied as a canvas rolled up in a tube for postage. Should you require the canvas put onto a stretcher frame, please specify and a price will be supplied on request.

GICLEE PRINT: The original painting is professionaly photographed and saved at a very high resolution. The printer then prints the image onto high quality canvas, using the best archival, waterproof inks. By printing onto canvas the picture has the appearance of an original.
