About "Little Katryn"

We had to do a totem project - where each part had to fit into the other part. I decided to make a voortrekker figure as it more part of my heritage. The little girl's name is katryn - she has a voortrekker hat with little doillie imprint and a horse shoe in her hands. When she was in the oven - one of my student colleagues forgot that clay can explode if its too thick. Hers exploded, but the most endearing thing was that everybody was corcerned about Katryn. Is she alright. Luckily she was made of thicker steel and nothing happened. The small little crack actually gives her more character and fits in with the whole sculpture.

About Liesel

Liesel Wessels

Liesel is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

As an artist – its important for me to constantly break through imaginary walls of limitations to reach and create more quality artwork that brings a message of hope. I love to work in two prominent subjects - namely the female and underwater imagery. The theme of my work usually has to do with spiritual issues - thinks like breaking away from limitations such as "the past", bondage and even sometimes traditions. I work in a variety of mediums, textures and techniques - but I prefer oil and pencil.

My greatest art influence has been artist like Chagall, Friedrich, Waterhouse, Klimt, Vermeer as well as South African artists - Wendy Malan and Berni Searle.

I believe its important as an artist and more specifically as a Christian to instead of just showing and complaining about all the evil and discrimination in the world - one should also offer a solution and be part of the solution. The answer to most of life's problem is usually so clear - the only difficulty lies in the narrowness of our mindsets.
