About Lorraine

Lorraine Bezuidenhout

Lorraine is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Artists Biography
Born in 1942 in East London, Eastern Cape, Lorraine began painting as a hobby in 1979 after suffering a slight stroke in 1994 she retired her accounting career and took up painting full-time in 1995.
Lorraine’s work can be found in a myriad of public and private collections both in South Africa and abroad. Her work has been seen in numerous exhibitions.
Lorraine is presently working on sketches in preparation for a Solo Exhibition titled African Dance depicting the local Xhosa dancers wearing traditional dress and incorporating their ancestral animal spirits such as the lion, elephant and leopard.
Lorraine has personally met and presented Mr Nelson Mandela with two of her Xhosa paintings and in honour and respect of her Xhosa-given name, takes pride in signing her Xhosa-given name “Thandokazi” (Loved by all) on all her Xhosa related artworks.
Lorraine’s zest for life and love of nature can be seen in her colourful bright acrylic paintings, whereas her oils tend to lean towards the softer and more delicate approach.
Artist Statement
I don’t set out to produce art about one subject or another and tend to start a new series each year.
I didn’t set out to be an environmental artist or create artwork relating to social commentary, but as my portfolio developed and people started to review my work, the descriptions started to emerge and I began to notice a pattern I hadn’t intended but am now pleased with.
My work tends to focus on the colourful and interesting cultural and traditional aspects that relate to my area the Eastern Cape. Some of my subject matter is about people’s daily routines or the hardships they have endured.
My passion is depicting flowers basking in the sun and throwing exciting shadows around them. Often inspired by their fragrance or their soft silky appearance but mostly it’s simply their grace and beauty.
Most times I never like to explain a certain piece of work – if you painted the artwork that is how you wanted it to be – hopefully it can speak for itself and whatever it says to the viewer – it is the right message. Each person takes something a little different from the same artwork and I am happy with that!
