About Geoff

Geoff Louw

Geoff is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

My story: born in Zululand, schooled in Durban. Studied graphics in Durban & Johannesburg before starting as a storyboard artist at several big-brand Joburg ad agencies. Became an art director before running screaming out of Johannesburg.

Worked as an art director & creative consultant on the tropical island of Mauritius for several years. Won many advertising and design awards. Ran screaming out of Mauritius.

Returned to SA & freelanced for various ad agencies as an art director & creative director. Finally ran screaming out of the ad industry. For the last decade I've been running screaming from place to place all over Southern & East Africa.

My general process is to attack a piece of paper with a ballpoint pen (although I'll also use pencil, charcoal, fineliner or a digital brush), to produce a wild & free drawing. I'll then add colour digitally (although I'll sometimes also work with oil, acrylic, watercolour or coloured pencil), experimenting heavily until it looks beautiful.

I draw what I see around me, so my subjects are almost always African. My objective is to show things in ways that they haven't been seen before - provided those ways are both beautiful and expressive.
