About "Black of the Night"
As with the 'Alter ego' painting this two months afterwards - I was still in a state of insecurity. Not knowing where my life is going to and being unsure of what the future held for me. Whan walking in darkness any light that suddenly shines on you makes you feel apprehensive. Darkness also makes everything lit with light look extremely out of perspective. Hence the huge arm across the face to help guard you against the unknown.

Originally I qualified as an Industrial Psychologist and worked in this field for a number of years. During 2006 I enrolled my son for art lessons and it turned out that he was very gifted. His talent must have been passed on and this fact needed some exploring. Thus my path as an artist developed.
As a child I enjoyed colour-in books on birds, drawing maps in Geography and body organs in the Biology class. Colours and various textures fascinated me.
I never had formal training, but attended the normal school art classes. Once, just for fun I drew a picture of Vasco Da Gama which I copied from my history book and managed to create a likeness. On another occasion I completed a project on historical aeroplanes, which I drew by myself.
Enrolling for drawing classes, I became inspired and completed several portraits of well known people in pencil. Learning something new from each experience. Eventually studying books on art I started experimenting with charcoal, acrylics and later oils. I have also completed a number of paintings in oil pastels. Although I have tried my hand at buildings and landscapes, my main interest lies in painting portraits, trying to get a likeness.
Visualizing various settings and colour schemes aswell as interior decorating, comes naturally. When in nature I tend to see figures and faces (animal and human) in rock formations and trees/shrubs. Nature for me is a confirmation of Gods creation and greatness. Nature grounds me and the sea energizes me.
Being self-taught has given me the opportunity to dig deep in my psyche and lose myself when painting. A portrait only comes to life once the eyes of the person has been completed. Then the soul shines through. It is an emotional path which gives me the satisfaction of being awestruck of what I am able to create.
I hope you will enjoy my art and that it will enrich your life as it does mine.
