About "Highveld Stormfront"
One of the profoundly distinct natural occurances familiar to all who live (or have lived) up on the South African Highveld is the awesome Highveld afternoon and evening thunderstorms which occur throughout much of the summertime. This work seeks to capture the turmultuous building of one of these immense storms.
One afternoon when sitting out in my garden in Melville I noticed that distinct shift of mood in the athmosphere whish seems to precede these storms. The wind was picking up, the clouds were blustering through the sky and a strange reddish-orange quality seem to be cast across the sky. I decided to film the storm from one of the highest points of Johannesburg where was a few minutes drive from where I was living: Johannesburg's iconic Constitution Hill. I raced through the building afternoon traffic to get to Constitution Hill and while the rain gradually began spitting down, I started filming the Northern View from Constitution Hill up towards Alexandra Township.
The painting is based on a still frame from the video of the building storm. Many might be perplexed by the unusual illuminated shapes jutting through the cloudscape in the foreground - these are the street lamp-posts which were specially designed for the revamping and honouring of the Constitution Hill area (where South Africa's exceptional Constitution was drafted into law) and are distinct markers of place and vantage point for this unique view of a Johannesburg storm as it builds.
