About "Africa"
There is something about just being there! These small waterholes have a "feeling " about them , the smell of mud and dung and that wild smell of elephant and Buffalo. To watch these Bulls cavort and cover themselves in mud and then dust just powerful. "Africa", depicts that issues that exist Bull elephants at some small waterhole, where the vegetation is getting hammered, the rural villagers trying to exist with their maize and Sorghum, an obvious attraction for big game, and the intensity of the elephant population on the vegetation, Baobabs and other vegetation being wiped out by elephant and other species pressure. The question we need to ask is how do we deal with this picture going forward? Are we going to be more proactive and come up with working solutions designed by people who are at the rock face and who KNOW or are we going to allow foreign bodies to interfere with impractical solutions and generally disagree with anything that comes from the experience of people on the ground. Wildlife and pristine wildlife areas are becoming scarce, they are becoming harder to find worldwide, they need protection and they need management systems and policies that are conducive to the preservation. Join us, come and see for yourself the wonder of these wild places, walk in the sands of the dried river beds and "feel' the vibration of the wilderness

About Astley
Africa is not a subject I discovered -- it is the landscape I grew up
listening to.
My work centres on baobabs and other enduring trees of the Zimbabwean wilderness. These forms stand at a scale beyond the human. Marked by seasons, drought, fire and the passage of
elephants, they carry visible records of time.
I am drawn to their presence -- not as symbols, but as living structures that have witnessed generations before us and will likely remain long after. In their stillness there is a sense of
continuity that shifts one's perspective.
Painting allows me to slow that encounter. It invites silence. My intention is to create work that encourages a deeper breath -- a moment in which the viewer feels both small and quietly connected to something older and enduring.
Each piece is grounded in lived experience of the Zimbabwean bush, where endurance is not metaphor but reality.
