About "Amajongosi"

Amajongosi , young Bull , young warrior , a male full of hormones and attitude , ancient warriors of Africa , this young bull let me know who he was , as I got close to him on an Island in The Zambezi river . His skin flecked with the oranges and browns of the coming sunset combined with the sands of this great valley his attitude was typical- head up and tail extended as he quietly turned away to initially increase distance between us .
From here he pulled a young tree out of the ground , to show his strength , and again turned away from me in a sign of almost contempt , he moved quietly off , hardly a sound came from his great weight as he moved into the reeds.
The whole experience as always left me humble and yet electric at the sheer magnificence of Africa .

About Astley

Astley Maberly

Africa is a place that captivates the mind, she is old and tells her tales in mysterious ways, we only have to sit quietly and listen to the stories
that flow from her. My late father Colonel Ted Maberly's stories of East Africa as a child thrilled me and inspired by all my late Uncle Charles
Astley Maberly's work on wildlife, set a path for me to follow later in life.
Africa is perhaps best described in pictures, as I know of no way to really portray her beauty in words, which is why I have turned to painting
and photography to find some way of conveying this beauty across to all. This journey certainly hasn't been a search for answers, this has
been more about learning to listen to the wild.

My passion for Elephants amongst other species goes back as far as I can remember, perhaps from the stories of old tuskers on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and the Selous - their intelligence as a species and the deep sense of knowing they portray, has led me to often refer to them as old souls.
My love for these creatures is what started me sketching and then painting, and yet it's the incredible symbiosis that is nature that has been my inspiration, that feeling of intelligent energy that overwhelms me in the presence of this magnificence.

Behind each Painting there is a life, a story about that special connection, the heightening of the senses and the realisation that we are undeniably a part of a higher more organised order!
I found that whilst I loved sketching, Oils became my medium of choice as I am able to more accurately represent the deep colour's of Africa, Oil paint can have a unique texture that allows the artist to push the boundaries of the norm and there are always new ideas and techniques, as a medium I find it open ended. That's why I use them oil especially on large Canvas there is nothing more impacting than a large Canvas of Africa !
Soon if we ignore the plight of Africa these wild places will exist no longer, the rate of organised poaching is accelerating; unbelievably, there will be no Elephants to speak of soon!
I see that each one of us can impact the future of the wild areas of Africa. The drums are beating, and it's time to listen.
Its all about awareness
