About Richard

Art is a language all on its own. It is an intuitive way of communicating ideas, emotions and at times, it is an extension of one's self.
Art is a brave act of expression.

I grew up in Bridgetown, a small settlement in Cape Town, South Africa.
It's here where my love for this form of expressing myself began as a child; visual imagery has always been a focal point for me.

It wasn't until I was in my twenties that I decided I needed to broaden my horizons and start exploring my voice as an artist. After studying design for three years and dipping my toes in the advertising and design world for a few years after that, it wasn't until 2018 that I decided to return to my initial desire to paint; This, I felt, was the way I wanted to engage with the world as an artist.
We connect with art because it reflects parts of ourselves that we love, hate, or forgot even existed. Visual imagery helps us to feel and think without words. It has the power to transport us to memories or take us on a journey with our imagination and that, to me, is sacred.

Inspired by the likes of Nicolai Fechin, Ingrid Christensen, and Gerhard Richter,
my style is something that I think will continue to grow as I do.
If I had to describe it, I would say that it is a blend of realism, abstract boldness, and impressionistic tones that capture a feeling or experience that I want to convey; a story that I want to tell.

Even though I have started later in my life than most artists, I believe in my abilities and want to share it with others. One of my favourite quotes are by Picasso: "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away."
My only hope is that my brushstrokes and unique vision will touch someone else's life in the way that art has, and always will be, intertwined with mine.
