About "Diana Ferrus"

Diana Ferrus is a South African woman whose activism brought Sarah Baartman home from France. Sarah aka Saartjie, Hottentot Venus, was exhibited like a show animal and also prostituted. She was dissected after her passing to learn how she differed from other human beings. Diana's poem tells the story of Sarah Baartman.

ARTIST STATEMENT OF KENNETH M ALEXANDER:

I am a South African artist, born on the Cape Flats, with a background in architecture. After my forced retirement at 60, I began translating my experiences and memories - both personal and professional - into artwork. My pieces, often featuring buildings and landscapes affected by apartheid's group areas act, document the forced relocations and resonate with a shared history. As a self-taught artist, my work combines skills from architecture with my unique perspective, forming a visual narrative of South Africa's past and present. My recent book, "C2C - From Cape Town to Cyrene" published in June 2024, presents 50 grayscale sketches that capture untold African stories. Using mediums like pencil, pen, watercolour, acrylic, and oil, I strive for authenticity, questioning societal norms and encouraging viewers to explore ideas within and beyond their current beliefs. My intention is to speak for those without a voice, staying true to my vision and values amidst a world that often seeks only "pretty pictures."
