About "Dutch Roemer | Aluminum Giclée"
Dutch Roemer is a study of light, transparency, and the remarkable history carried within an ordinary object.
The painting depicts a seventeenth-century Dutch roemer associated with the poet and diplomat Constantijn Huygens. In 1619, poet and glass engraver Anna Roemers Visscher engraved one of her own poems onto the glass and presented it to Huygens as a gift.
Her words speak of creative silence and renewal. She describes her pen as dry, her mind rusted and her lyre unable to sing, asking Huygens to bring her water from Helicon, the mythical home of the Muses, so that her ink might flow and she could write again.
It was this meeting of object, history and creative thought that drew me to the glass.
Against the dark background, the engraved lettering appears almost suspended within the transparent vessel. Light catches the rim, inscription and elaborate glass foot before travelling across the pale surface beneath it. Through careful observation of transparency, reflection and tonal changes, the glass becomes both object and bearer of a story.
For me, Dutch Roemer is not simply a painting of historic glassware. It is also about the survival of a creative voice through time: words engraved into glass more than four centuries ago, illuminated once again through paint.
The original oil painting has been sold. This 20 [0xC397] 30 cm Aluminum gicl[0xC3A9]e is produced from a high-resolution archival scan of the original artwork.
Aluminum's luminous surface particularly complements the painting's transparency, reflected light, and fine engraved detail.

Leone Tonkinson is a South African-born fine artist based in the Netherlands and founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach centred on the presence and character of natural light.
Working primarily in oils, she combines traditional layered painting techniques with close observation, creating still lifes, wildlife and botanical works marked by luminosity, quiet presence and finely observed detail.
