About Sherinne

Sherinne Kemp

Sherinne Kemp was born on 28 March 1983 in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Now in her mid-twenties, she has always been most at home in front of an easel with a paintbrush in her hand. After matriculating from St Andrews School for Girls in 2000 Sherinne headed to London where enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL).

In 2005 Sherinne returned to South Africa and has since been commissioned by private and corporate clientele – locally and abroad – to create tailor-made artworks. Some of her most recent commissions include a large abstract painting for the upmarket ‘Chocadore’ in Hyde Park mall, six paintings for a private collector’s luxury apartment in Johannesburg and a painting for RADA (Royal Academy for the Dramatic Arts) in London.

Over the past seven years Sherinne’s work has come to hang on the walls of homes in South Africa (Joburg & Cape Town), the United Kingdom (London & Manchester) and, most recently, Bulgaria (Rousse & Sofia). At the beginning of 2008 Sherinne took the decision to put all of her energy into her passion – painting – and left the corporate arena, moving out of the advertising industry and into her purpose-built studio in Joburg. The result is a steady stream of new, exciting paintings that demonstrate her love for beauty in all of its forms, from the inside of an oyster shell to the kaleidoscopic African sunset.

Sherinne’s work is not defined by one medium or style. “Variety is indeed the spice of life,” she says. Her studio is home to abstract and figurative pieces crafted from oil, acrylic, pencil and mixed media – her subject determines her medium.

“I find inspiration in the small things as well as the grand. I love the challenge of capturing a feeling or a force of nature on canvas. The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing an idea develop and getting so caught up in a pot of paint that I lose all track of time. I am a firm believer in experimenting and stepping out of my comfort zone.”

Sherinne’s paintings are multi-faceted, multi-layered thoughts on canvas. “I paint whatever catches my eye. From the tiny flicker of a butterfly’s wing to the decadent swirl of milk chocolate to the chill in the air that comes with the first frost of winter,” she explains. “I hope that my paintings intrigue people and that every time they look at one of my pieces they see something new.”

“Someone once told me that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life – I couldn’t love what I do more.”
