About "Golden Eland and Aloes"

Inspired by travels across Africa, this silkscreen painting weaves together elements from Kenya, West Africa, and Zambia. Eland and baboons feature at the centre, surrounded by borders influenced by Senufo cloth, Hausa relief designs, Adinkra symbols, and traditional African motifs. Artefacts such as Central African rings, cow bone buttons, and beads are embedded into the work. The silhouetted trees from photographs taken in Keny, and the warthogs -- drawn by Vivienne's father, Bobby Lawrence -- add personal touches to this rich tribute to African heritage and storytelling.

About Vivienne

Vivienne Lawrence

Vivienne, daughter of Bobby, grew up in the Lowveld in a home full of art. After school, she did a secretarial course and then studied ceramics in Italy for a year.

She worked as a ceramic artist for 14 years and had a small studio at the Craft Gallery in Rocky Drift. Her first show at the Winkler Hotel in White River sold out, followed by another at the Nelspruit Library.

In the 1990s, Vivienne began taking photos of wildlife while travelling with her husband John Bassi, a helicopter pilot working in game capture. They travelled across Southern Africa, and she also visited Kenya twice for photography.

Later, Vivienne started painting on fabric in her studio at Casterbridge and held shows in the Lowveld and Johannesburg.

In 2018, Vivienne became ill with a brain tumour and had to stop working. With support from her cousin Heather, she began painting again--using her left hand. The artworks she creates now show her strength and love for art.

Today, Vivienne makes bold silkscreen prints of animals with African patterns. Her work is used in hotels, lodges, offices, and homes.

She also makes prints, pillow covers, table runners, and scarves.
