About "haunting eyes"

I was encouraged to paint Steve Mc Currys' 'The Afghan Girl', aka Sharbat Gula from the National Geographic because I was good at painting 'eyes'.....at least according to my mother!!!... :)
I was also really taken by her story on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
She was orphaned at 12 years old when this picture was taken of her in a Pakistani Refugee camp, and then She was found again 17 years later by Steve McCurry.....
Well, it was a good choice because when Oprah Winfreys personal assistant in Atlanta saw it she straight away helped me contact Steve, and now he has it hanging in his 5th Ave studio in New York.

About Colin

Colin Eksteen started painting in August 2000. "Although I have have had no formal art training, I served my 'apprenticeship' by successfully copying 80 famous paintings by the Impressionists and various abstract artists for LIPCO, a Law firm in S.A.
My true passion is Namibia and its'people, namely, the HIMBA tribe of Kaokoland. I recently spent a month with the Himba gathering reference material, which was a life changing experience for me that will always cause me to strive to capture the enchanting character of these beautiful people on canvas.
I hope my paintings convey the spirit in which they were painted."
