About "Healed by the Stripes"
Zebra Painting - Healed by the Stripes celebrates the extraordinary resilience found in nature and within ourselves. Emerging from darkness, the zebra stands as a quiet reminder that life's deepest scars do not diminish our beauty--they become part of the story that shapes our strength. Every stripe, every shadow and every mark speaks of endurance, restoration and the courage to keep moving forward.
This painting was inspired by the remarkable way zebras survive in the African wilderness. Their distinctive stripes are more than a beautiful pattern; they are a masterpiece of nature's design. By confusing predators and breaking up the outline of the herd, the stripes become a symbol of protection through unity, wisdom and adaptation. What appears fragile is, in reality, one of nature's greatest strengths.
As I painted, the symbolism of the zebra continued to deepen. The white markings cutting through the darkness reminded me of the journeys we all experience. Every challenge leaves its mark, yet those very experiences often become the source of healing, resilience and hope. Rather than hiding our scars, life teaches us to wear them as evidence of growth and transformation.
The dramatic contrast between light and shadow reflects the tension between struggle and restoration. While much of the painting is intentionally subdued, the illuminated stripes draw the viewer's eye forward, symbolising the quiet light that remains even during life's darkest seasons. Healing is rarely instant; it is built one step, one experience and one lesson at a time.
Painted using professional artist-grade oils, acrylics and ink on canvas, the artwork combines expressive brushwork with layered textures and rich monochromatic tones. The restrained colour palette allows the emotional narrative to take centre stage, while subtle highlights create depth, movement and an atmosphere of quiet contemplation.
Healed by the Stripes is ultimately a painting about restoration rather than survival alone. About Ida
Ida Lombard is a South African contemporary artist whose work explores light, nature, movement and the emotions hidden within a moment. Her distinctive Abstract Realism combines expressive oil painting, acrylics and mixed media to move beyond literal representation and reveal the atmosphere and feeling within her subjects.
Her connection with art began in childhood, influenced by time spent exploring the natural world and early exposure to the discipline of painting. After formal art studies and more than four decades of continued independent practice, Ida has developed a highly expressive visual language characterised by textured surfaces, energetic brushwork, palette-knife marks, expressive drips and layered colour.
Wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, botanical subjects and portraits recur throughout her work, with themes of light, stillness, vulnerability, endurance, hope and transformation. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, Ida seeks to capture the spirit of a subject--the quiet tension beneath stillness, the movement within a landscape, or the emotional presence of an animal.
Today, Ida works full-time from her Johannesburg studio, creating original paintings for private collectors in South Africa and internationally. Her work is influenced by the expressive energy of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Vladimir Volegov, as well as the storytelling power found in South African wildlife art.
