About "Hoop Play"
Play and fun inspire me. I love the energy, the movement of physical play and the way that play requires a focussed attention that shuts out the world and allows one to be in the moment. This girl was having such fun. The painting attempts to capture her moment. It was executed quickly, using a palette knife, in keeping with the fleeting nature of what she was doing. Textured elements on the recycled canvas add to the sense of playfulness.
I draw and paint because it gives me joy. I am currently working on a series of portraits. Last year I completed a series of mandalas, exploring an old interest in symmetry. Mandalas are symbols of wholeness and change; as such I find them a particularly good vehicle to explore emotions. A lot of my earlier work was based on dreams.
