About "Jacking up the Sea to See what is Happening Below"

When Alvera studied Salvador Dali's work, she realized that a way to find inspiration to paint is to ask a silly question and to paint the answer.
She read in the newspaper about people living in caves above Llandudno in Cape Town. She asked: "What if there are people living under the mountain?" This is her interpretation of the answer to that question.

About Alvera

Alvera Walker

Alvera Walker passed away in Feb 2008 at the age of 82. She started painting at 62 when she joined a local art club in Port Alfred. Within a year she was selling potboilers at the local coffee shops. Alvera loved painting the wildlife big five, animals which she grew up with in the Rhodesian bushveld. She spent the last ten years of her life near the sea in Port Alfred, a lovely quiet seaside town in the Eastern Cape. Many of Alvera's magnificent seascapes and dolphins were inspired by the beauty of this place. She leaves a legacy of only 150 paintings that include birds, dolphins, wildlife and flowers. She also painted some whimsical paintings that she called her "What if? "paintings, which were strongly influenced by Salvador Dali. Many of her paintings have been sold to art lovers around the world and now grace some of the most beautiful homes in the world.
