About "Lambertsbay - West Coast painting"

Commission: Department of Economic Development and Tourism

A lot of contrast was used with regards to light and shadow in describing the different forms in the painting. Texture ranges from thickly applied and sandy to smooth. Different hues of blue and sea green as well as reddish hues predominates in the painting. Shadows are cast to the left with light coming from the right-hand side.

The idea behind the painting was born after a group of local artists (myself included) paid a visit to Lambertsbay harbor. I was watching as the fish was being brought to land - probably snoek. We all loved going to the harbor towns as a group to paint and draw. At that stage I was a strict vegetarian and I always felt indifferent and left out when my artist friends were eagerly scrambling to get some fresh fish. That is where the fishy figure on the bottom left of the painting comes from. I was also struck and influenced by resent news of a calamity that once again struck the fishing fraternity when a fishing boat was wrecked and many people lost the men who were providers for their families. The newspapers were filled with photographs of grieving family members. It again made me realize how fisher folk always lived with tremendous fear and respect for the sea. I have also been a great admirer of Marc Chagall whose compassionate portrayal of relationships between people and animals has influenced me in creating this work. Fishermen need angels to protect them when they are at sea which is why there is an angel in the picture - the sea provides a livelyhood for them, but there is also great danger involved. Like many others, coast dwellers often are very religious and mostly also very superstitious with a strong belief system prevalent between the fisher folk - hence also the praying hands.
