Life draw has a magic about it. There are fleeting moments when a model has a particular look, an intensity in her gaze, or just move in a certain way. I am only now becoming aware of these situations that arise while painting and try and capitalise on them and integrate this magic in the painting. Models like Melissa makes it easier for us painters by giving so many beautiful moments along the way to capture.
I feel privileged to have had my passion for making art being reawakened in my early thirties. After stumbling along for a decade on my own, I happened to join the Observatory Artists[0x1] Co-operative in Cape Town for life draw every Thursday in 2009. Life draw was the catalyst for my transformation into an artist. The discipline of drawing from the model has been key to fine tuning my artistic eye. My aim is to continually improve my drawing while exploring composition, mood and atmosphere in painting. I am always pushing the abstract beauty of the composition with visible brush strokes while still developing recognizable imagery.
