About "Morning Traffic Series #12 - N1 Railway Bridge#2"

Driving to work in the winter gave me the idea to capture the bright red, amber, green and cold and warm white reflections with my cell camera and then use the images for paintings. I love painting expressively since it feels free and it has a freshness about it. I work with a limited pre-determined palette before I start a series and then stick to it]. The most difficult for me is not the painting of shapes and colours, but the knowing when to stop!

About Hugo

On my way to work [I'm Visual Arts teacher at SACS, Newlands HS, Cape Town] in the winter mornings synthetic lights reflect bright red, amber, green and a multitude of cold and warm contrasting reflections. I, or my shotgun pilot teenage son, take random photographs through the windshield. As can be expected, only about 1 in a 100 can be edited and prove suitable as an oil painting. I work with a limited predetermined palette before I start a series of 24 works. There is specific personal symbolism to this: My birth date making me a Scorpio - 8th Zodiac -water sign. Coincidentally (and in this instance fittingly) element 24 is Chromium (Cr), a metallic element that can take on a high polish.
The first step for me is to start with a large brush and work expressively and quickly. I then move on to smaller brushes, working slowly and making careful calculated brush marks. Challenging to me is taking care not to over-paint a work. It is very easy to kill the freshness of a work by doing too much. The question and the answer is in this instance is the same thing - knowing when to stop!
I have a solo exhibition scheduled in October at Rust & Vrede gallery in Durbanville and am working on a Winter Reflections series - traffic and streets on rainy nights.
To take a break from painting, I am currently also busy with ink studies of cats. We now have four cats in our house and they supply more than enough source material!
