About "Mother City"
These paintings are a progression of the city series. Here however, I am trying to capture the feel of modern day city life by combining a few design elements together. The choice of elements is personal. I use references that appeal to me visually. I love to use design elements and am not using a literal scene or location, such as a particular street in the city. This is a combination of shapes, colors and forms that appeal to me and work together to make a statement about our environment. It includes designs, photographs, movie posters, television, architecture, brochures - anything with branding and everyday life. I am not interested in making a comment or judgement. It is just a reflection of everyday life put together in a very graphic format. I enjoy the imagery of graffiti artist Banksy. - I love the way he combines elements.
Andrew studied Fine Art at Michaelis School of Fine Art from 1980 -1984 and then worked as Foundation Year lecturer at Ruth Prowse Art Centre in Salt River Cape Town from 1985 to 1991.
