About "Namaqualand Minstrel"
I tried to capture the heat of the sun and the dry, dusty feel of Namaqualand, where I found this rural self-taught guitarist. He was "paying his way" as a builders helper, but his first love was clearly his guitar! He took a mid-day break to play for us in the heat, stopping briefly to ask if there was a "special request".
I painted and illustrated for the advertising industry until my first solo exhibition in 1990. Subsequently I've been painting in oils, watercolours and pastels for exhibitions and commissions. I also illustrate children's books, the most recent being a children's fairy book written by long-time friend Margaret Roberts.
2 solo exhibitions - 1991 and 1994
3 year Art Diploma at Durban's Natal Technical College.
