About "Ostrich under Boabab"

This mixed-media silkscreen artwork features a powerful central image of a towering baobab tree beneath a richly layered African sky. The flock of ostriches is based on Vivienne Lawrence's own wildlife photography, their bold forms moving across the textured foreground in groups of varied scale and rhythm.

The glowing gold side panels are filled with reflections of stylised antelope and birds in black and white, framed by traditional African symbols. The black bird motifs are inspired by Senufo earth-dyed cloths from the Ivory Coast, Mali, and Upper Volta, bringing cultural resonance to the borders.

At the base of the work, Ethiopian cross charms are embedded alongside cow bone buttons topped with tiny glass beads, adding tactile richness. A stylised snake in the lower left is echoed by white-on-gold meandering motifs that flow across the surface, creating visual movement and symbolic depth.

Ostrich under Baobab is a tribute to the African landscape--its trees, creatures, patterns, and spirit--woven into a striking, symbolic composition.

About Vivienne

Vivienne Lawrence

Vivienne, daughter of Bobby, grew up in the Lowveld in a home full of art. After school, she did a secretarial course and then studied ceramics in Italy for a year.

She worked as a ceramic artist for 14 years and had a small studio at the Craft Gallery in Rocky Drift. Her first show at the Winkler Hotel in White River sold out, followed by another at the Nelspruit Library.

In the 1990s, Vivienne began taking photos of wildlife while travelling with her husband John Bassi, a helicopter pilot working in game capture. They travelled across Southern Africa, and she also visited Kenya twice for photography.

Later, Vivienne started painting on fabric in her studio at Casterbridge and held shows in the Lowveld and Johannesburg.

In 2018, Vivienne became ill with a brain tumour and had to stop working. With support from her cousin Heather, she began painting again--using her left hand. The artworks she creates now show her strength and love for art.

Today, Vivienne makes bold silkscreen prints of animals with African patterns. Her work is used in hotels, lodges, offices, and homes.

She also makes prints, pillow covers, table runners, and scarves.
