About "Pegs on the Line"

Honest things are simple, practical, useful things. They are not pretentious, they do not try to be more than what they are and yet they make our lives so much simpler, easier. I think that these simple things, and common domesticity, should be celebrated. Hence this picture.
I love the blue of the Johannesburg sky, contrasted with the crisp white tablecloth. There is something joyous about the yellow diamond pattern on the clothesline in my back garden. Clothes pegs, worn smooth over time, become things of beauty. Recycled canvas, in keeping with the humble theme, adds texture to the painting.

About Judy

Judy Backhouse

I draw and paint because it gives me joy. I am currently working on a series of portraits. Last year I completed a series of mandalas, exploring an old interest in symmetry. Mandalas are symbols of wholeness and change; as such I find them a particularly good vehicle to explore emotions. A lot of my earlier work was based on dreams.
