About "Pondo Girls Contemplating Marriage"

This work give us the window to the intriguing window into the daily lives of pondo girls long ago before the introduction of the formal school education. These girls have been informally learning from their mothers, since their early stages of life, the work they would do when they become wives. They have been helping by helping their mothers with cooking, gathering fire woods and fetching water from the streams. Here these girls are relaxing with their companion-a dog on the background -doing beads a work they do casually whey they have finished with the routine work. I have used a dog as a symbol of loyalty. During Intonjane(girls passage to adulthood when they will be ready for marriage)they have been taught by the elders(experienced adult women)how to be loyal to their fathers-in-law,mothers-in-law and most importantly their very husbands. Like a dog, their companion, they have to be loyal even though things are painful and unpleasant. They have to be loyal even if their husbands are having love affair with other women. It is in their minds that they will not marry again when their husbands die and that they will have to remain with the husband's clan till they themselves die.The dog on of the girls which also form the head of man means that as the girls who are in waiting for marriage they always wish to dream about a dog as it is believed that a dog symbolizes an ancestor who brings luck to the clan. This luck is marriage as well as bringing wealth to the clan through lobola or dowry. I have used a calabash which represent fertility and this means that these girls have to produce a lot of children so as to increase the clan.

About Mawetu

Mawetu Janda

I am a cultural, social and political commentator who use his art to respond to happy and fiery events that are constantly unfolding in our society. my art is a weapon by which I teach people to tolerate things like cultural and gender diversity which is an undeniable face of a free world. my art is a missile - an instrument of war for attack and defense against the enemy - a politician who exploits his fellow country men for self-enrichment, profit and popularity. I significantly use symbols and ambigraphy to assist me wit the unveiling truth that may be intentionally hidden from the people about a particular event. However, I subtly use symbols and ambigraphy to veil naked truth that might get me into a big trouble.
