About "Protea | Heart of Gondwana | Fine Art Giclée"
Fine-art giclee on Hahnem[0xC3BC]hle German Etching 310 gsm, individually signed by the artist and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Description / Notes
Protea Heart of Gondwana is a botanical portrait celebrating one of Southern Africa's most distinctive flowers.
The protea rises against a quiet grey background, its extraordinary architectural form unfolding through layers of soft pink, crimson and ivory. Deep green leaves provide weight and structure beneath the flower, balancing its delicacy with a sense of strength and permanence.
For me, the protea carries meaning beyond its beauty. It belongs to the ancient flora of Southern Africa and connects me to the landscape and botanical heritage of the place where I was born. The title Heart of Gondwana reflects that sense of deep origin, endurance, and belonging.
Rather than treating the flower simply as decoration, I wanted to give the single protea the presence of a portrait. Close observation of its structure, subtle colour changes and light reveals something simultaneously delicate and formidable.
The original artwork remains in the artist's private collection and is not offered for sale.
This fine-art reproduction is produced from a very high-resolution professional scan of the original and printed on Hahnem[0xC3BC]hle German Etching 310 gsm. The softly textured surface of the paper is particularly suited to the botanical detail and subtle tonal qualities of the work.
Each print is individually signed by Leone Tonkinson and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

About Leone
Leone Tonkinson is a South African-born fine artist based in the Netherlands and founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach centred on the presence and character of natural light.
Working primarily in oils, she combines traditional layered painting techniques with close observation, creating still lifes, wildlife and botanical works marked by luminosity, quiet presence and finely observed detail.
Her South African roots and her life within the Dutch landscape both inform her work, bringing together warmth, nature and a strong sense of place. Rather than simply depicting a subject, Tonkinson seeks the moment when light, atmosphere and presence give it emotional resonance.
Her work is held in private collections and exhibited in the Netherlands and internationally.

Exhibitions
Leone Tonkinson has exhibited in both South Africa and Europe, with recent exhibitions in the Netherlands. Her work is held in private collections internationally.
She is the founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach that explores light not simply as illumination, but as an active presence within the subject. Through traditional layered oil-painting techniques, careful observation and controlled natural light, form, atmosphere and emotional presence emerge together.
Her work applies this approach to still life, wildlife and the natural world, where reflected light, transparency, texture and subtle shifts in colour become part of the subject itself.
Education
Formal training in architecture, design, and classical oil
