About Gerda
Gerda is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.
My approach to picture making is based on the simple advice that the art of painting is to see beyond the every day familiar vision of things.
To see the fantasized of the mundane.
That realism wasn’t sufficient for me struck me at a time when I started painting more from the heart than from the head.
Although, in my opinion, total abstraction is not able to convey enough emotion.
I also started painting from memory and not using specific reference materials. I concentrated not on what I had seen , but more on what was left of a particular moment and feeling.
It is self evident that every person interprets everything they see in a different way. Mental factors such as your background and all your past experiences, as well as physical factors, right down to the amount of rods and cones in your eyes, will effect your perception of any outside object or landscape. It would seem virtually impossible to see something the way another person sees it. By making my paintings the way I do, is to let other people see the world through my eyes as I see and experience life.
In a moment of clarity I realised that everything I wanted to do in my art was in the landscape.
Being creative is a need, like air or food. I look at this preoccupation as a blessing. It is exciting and stimulating to create art and to share art with enthusiasts and other creators. Painting is a passion and a necessity.
I love it when people see and recognise things, places and feelings in my paintings. I think it makes the painting so much more easy to relate to.
