About David

David was interested in drawing from his earliest days. Pencil and paper were constant companions from as far back as anyone can remember. When in grade 6, one of his paintings was selected and submitted to the permanent art exhibition of the then Natal Education Department, Pietermaritzburg.
Later came further recognition via 1st prize in category, Zululand Show 1968 and 1st prize overall in the Western Municipal Art competition 1985.
This was followed by an extensive commission to paint scenes at Marianhill Monastery. Several works were sent by the monastery to the Victorian as gfts and for display in various facilities there. A newly completed commission was for the management offices of the Pavillion complex in Durban. Having lived all his life in Pinetown / Marianhill area, David has great familiarity with his subject. Recently he has returned on frequent occassions to the farmland of the Willow Grange district of Estcourt and the Kamberg / Rosetta area, where he spent much of his youth.
Most works are executed on site "in plain aire" in order to capture the immediacy of the subject with only rare exceptions, painted wholly or partly in the studio.
Davids motto is (in the words of Camille Pissarro), "Paint generously and unhesitatingly.
