About Viv
I am inspired by light - by the inner light of a face, the sunlight on a ripe plum or the shiny surface of an aubergine, the dappled light cast by the leaves of trees in the autumn.
The phrase, "struggling artist" is surely true in my case. Every day I feel as if I am learning the art of oil painting anew - of all the things I have done in my life, the study and practise of oil painting is an ever-challenging one. It is NEVER EASY!!
For me the "road less travelled" is the better one in the end, even though that path is often lonely.
However, it is the process of making art that is the most exciting, challenging and enjoyable. Staying focussed in the moment rather than looking for a quick result, is for me the best way of working. Sometimes I work almost unconsciously, letting the painting talk and direct me. There are times when I cannot paint at all because I am not "open" to new ideas and inspiration, or the minutiae of life interferes with the painting process.
My better paintings are about feelings, ideas, concepts, dreams and often take months to complete.
The difficult part comes in trying to keep the work fresh. As I change my mind fairly often during the process, the act of painting is always fresh for me!
