About Phillip

Phillip Steyn

Phillip is an Artist with SouthAfricanArtists.com based in South Africa.

Inspired by the subject matter, the rough textures of Africa, the earth and the etched and characteristic faces of its people it just would not seem right to paint a tribal portrait using a technique the old masters would to capture the marble white face of an European model. Building on this a sense of style and composition independent and almost in defiance of western art-school influence was created. A spirit of free experimentation, uncensored and unrestrained has allowed Steyn to enjoy and nourish the desire to be creative, a release from the slavish labor of photo-realism and "how to paint" recipe's discarded to embark on a new adventure. A loose and flowing merge of colour, tone and texture, allowing the painting to develop, as if it had a life of its own. Falling in love with each painting. An obsession with texture, impastos that would evoke the viewer to touch the work and stimulate the fingertips of the eyes. Two years formal education at Parktown Art Collage. Five Years practical experience in commercial art and sculpture. Two years experience at interior decorators / picture frames, Art Space.
Phillip Steyn provides a comprehensive look at contemporary paintings, featuring bold abstracts, tribal portraits, African animals and various ethnic groups from all over Africa.
These canvasses, often presented in woven Ila-la palm tree frames, are lovingly handmade and skillfully painted by Phillip Steyn, an accomplished artist with a passion for African culture and a great love for the big cats of Africa. These contemporary works each comes with detailed information about the artwork and/or culture being represented.
Cultural subject, bold use of colour and highly textured technique combine to evoke a strong feeling of Africa and its lost empires and fading tribal heritage. A celebration of African tribes people, not yet contaminated by western influence, full of the pulsating force of Africa. A quality and style of art that is fresh and provoking. The work speaks of the character and beauty of the African tribes dressed in traditional regalia. The depth of emotion, the expression of colour, the texture and allure of the creations are delightful. The story of each portrait evokes conversation.
Currently I undertake commissions with a waiting period of one to two months depending on the workload. Thanks to all the SA galleries that continue to support and sell my works.
